A fabric rated UPF 50 lets through one fiftieth of the sun's UV. A white cotton T-shirt is about UPF 7, and nearer 3 once it is wet through.

Merino in the heat
Merino holds sweat inside the fibre rather than on its surface, so an hour into a hot match it hangs off you instead of sticking to you.
